Conversations on Curating

What is a sýningarstjóri?
Why are there so few formal curatorial positions in Iceland?
How can we drive the curatorial forward here?
How can the conditions for developing curatorial practices be better?

Building on the recent article, What even is a sýningarstjóri?, KOK invites you to an open conversation on curatorial practice, precarity, institutional structures, and the future of the field in Iceland.

Curating extends beyond exhibition-making. It involves research, attention, care, mediation, long-term thinking, and advocacy for the arts. If we want a strong and sustainable art ecosystem, we need to discuss the conditions that make this work possible.

Everyone is welcome, and we especially hope to bring curators, museum directors, art professionals, and cultural workers into the same room.

Join us to listen, share, question, and reflect together as we open a thoughtful and necessary conversation about the future of curatorial practice in Iceland. We hope you’ll add your voice and help shape this ongoing dialogue.

The conversation will be held in English and Icelandic. Read about accessibility in the Nordic House on nordichouse.is

KoK launch

Join us as we launch KOK, an open curatorial collective and platform for conversation, curiosity, and connection in the Icelandic art scene. Come for a drink, stay for a chat, and celebrate with us!

KOK moves between its online home, in person, and the art spaces of Reykjavík, creating pockets for conversation wherever it lands. It welcomes frustrations, hopes, and reflections, and celebrates the sparks of excitement and inspiration in the art scene.

For our first gathering, we invite curators, artists, organisers, and anyone interested in the arts to join us and respond to the question:

What conversations do you wish there was more space for in the art scene?

Drop by to, reflect, submit anonymous messages or wishes for the upcoming New Year, and help shape the conversations that KOK can carry forward.
